Dan Woltman (Beaver Dam, WI) began the final round of the 11th Metropolitan Open Championship Presented by Plaza Motors with a 3 shot cushion at 10-under par.  His closest pursuer was 2014 Champion Chris Brant.  That lead would shrink to 2 during the round, but at the 17th Tee was up to 4 shots over a trio of others at -5.  That trio included Brett Paquet (Chandler, AZ) formerly of St. Charles who completed play much earlier with a 5-under 65in the final round.  Paquet stuck around for the afternoon to see where his 5-under total would settle in.

Woltman who had been steady for the entire day ran into some trouble on the 17th and bogeyed, but retain a 3-shot lead heading to the Country Club of St. Albans signature finishing hole.  Did the nerves finally get to Woltman a bit?  His drive found the fairway bunker and ultimately his only double bogey over 54-holes would finish with a 4-over 74 and a one shot victory in the 11th Metropolitan Open!

Woltman is pictured above holding the James S. Manion Trophy along with his wife and full-time caddie Merissa.  Woltman stated afterward, “This is a fantastic event, on a unbelievable golf course.  Only way I am not back next year is full status on the Web.com or PGA Tours.” Woltman earned a $25,000 payday with his victory.

Low Amateur honors went to Skip Berkmeyer and Sam Migdal who each had Even par totals at 210 for the championship.  Brad Hopfinger had the low round of Sunday with a 6-under 64.  Hopfinger finished on the cutline at 143, but moved all the way up to a T-7 with his final round.

Full field results can be found on the Plaza Motors Scoreboard via the following link, 11th Metropolitan Open Championship.  Results below include the final payout of the $95,000 total purse this year.

Memorial Day Weekend, much more than a Holiday…

Memorial Day unofficially closed the door on spring and kicked off the beginning of what is sure to be another fantastic summer. Though the weekend is a time that most Americans spend grilling, boating and relaxing with friends and family; Memorial Day exists to honor the brave men and women who have lost their lives serving this great country.Pool House 062

Starting in the 1860’s as a way for communities to remember those that fought and died during the Civil War, the American holiday is a chance to honor every soldier who has died serving in any branch of the U.S. military.

On behalf of the Country Club of St. Albans, we would like to thank all the brave men and women in uniform who serve this country and we honor those that have given the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom!

*****************************

The St. Albans property bears many symbols of the past, from the Civil War era graves that dot the landscape to the very names of the golf courses. The designers meticulously preserved these historic remnants when they set off to create the unique tapestry of St. Albans. The course designers embraced this history and decades later, Bill Maynard, Director of Golf Course Operations, and his team continue to honor those who lost their lives fighting for this country. More than 5 cemeteries can be seen throughout the Tavern Creek course including holes 3, 4, 7 and 10. The American flags are only the start as the planning phase of initiating a long term process to restore the grave sites has begun.
